| Description | The pre-Miocene rock distribution in Northland, New Zealand, is interpreted as a unified structure in which: (1) a southwestern shelf of Eocene-Oligocene age existed as well as the better known northeastern shelf of the same age; (2) this southwestern shelf has moved northeastwards; (3) rootless masses of ophiolitic rocks have also moved northeastwards away from their root zones in the west (very large igneous bodies known to lie off the west coast off Northland); and (4) boudins of serpentinite have also been structurally moved northeastwards along thrust planes away from their zone of origin—the Junction Magnetic Anomaly. Overturned folding and thrusting point to a local compressive regime, these northeastward translations being part of the associated crustal shortening. The name “Northland Allochthon” is rejected. |
