| Description | This chapter describes the principles and features of particle separation and typical particle collectors and discusses the particle separation in a hydro-cyclone. The operation to separate dust from a fluid stream is referred to as particle collection. It has been utilized to recover valuable materials from many chemical processes and to remove air pollutants consisting of particulate matter from exhaust streams before exiting to the atmosphere. When solid particles are captured by a solid obstacle, the collected particles remain on the obstacle, which results in an increase in both collection performance and flow resistance with time is also makes the release of captured particles from the obstacles difficult. Numerical calculations of fluid flow and particle motions in the cyclone have been conducted by W. H. Ayers et al., L. X. Zhou and S. L. Soo, K. Yamamoto et al., and M. Yamamoto and O.
