| Description | Coupled flow through porous media is important in the study of many geotechnical problems, including filter and drain design, study of internal erosion and piping, and liquefaction, among others. In this study, a novel method is presented to visualise key components of flow of fluid through pores of a saturated granular media. Combined with particle detection and tracking algorithms, the method allows for study of coupled flow problems in geomechanics. In addition, the high fidelity measurements of flow field resulting from this study allow for development and validation of Navier-Stokes type solutions for coupled flow in discrete element model simulations. This chapter produces highly resolved information regarding flow of fluid through granular media by refractive index (RI) matching and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Flow through porous media is an important problem of interest to many fields of science and engineering. In civil engineering applications, internal erosion and design of filters, solute and contaminant transport, energy geotechnics, and problems where rapid generation. Dissipation of pore water pressures is important, such as liquefaction and cavitation, all benefit from advances in the study of flow through porous media. Flow through the pores of a granular media can be studied at the macro scale or at the micro/pore scale. The chapter resents methods, along with experimental results, that can be used to inform numerical and analytical studies at the micro scale. Experiments were performed to visualise steady state flow through porous media. The experimental setup was designed to visualise steady state flow of fluid through the pores of a granular material.
