| Description | The 23 expert teachers were using a wide range of teaching strategies and they selected them at particular times for particular reasons, drawing on the repertoire they had in store. By definition, repertoire means 'the entire stock of things available in a field or of a kind'. It would probably be untrue to say we could describe the entire stock of teaching strategies used by the teachers in our study, given that we were not living alongside them in their classrooms day after day. However, based on our visits to them over an 18-month period, we can describe in detail many of the techniques and devices they used to convey knowledge and promote learning in young children.
