| Description | The properties and processability of any feedstock are dictated by the chemical composition of the feedstock (Chapter 3), and once the chemical composition of a material has been established, it becomes possible to correlate composition and properties. In terms of bulk composition, a feedstock can be fractionated into four bulk fraction: (i) the saturates fraction, (ii) the aromatics fraction, (iii) the resins or resin constituents, and (iv) the asphaltenes or asphaltene constituents. However, the names of these fractions are not intended to be (and, indeed, are not) an accurate representation of the chemical compositions of the fractions but are used to indicate the method of separation of the fractions (Speight, 2014, 2015). In previous chapters (Chapters 2 and 3), there has been frequent reference to the asphaltene constituents of feedstocks and, because of the importance of this fraction during refining, further discussion is warranted here.
