| Description | Plant-parasitic nematodes are serious problem for economically important crops. The plant-parasitic nematodes have been recognized an important constraints in the production of agricultural crops including wheat and rice which constitute the two most important staple food crops of the world. Estimated losses due to plant-parasitic nematodes attack on different important cultivated crops all over the world by FAO are around 400 million dollars. In India, annual crop losses have been reported Rs. 242.1 billion. A large number of plant-parasitic nematodes are known to infect cereal crops in all parts of the world including India. Many plant-parasitic nematodes are elongate, eel-like; adults range in length from about 0.5 mm to 1 cm but most of them are less than 2 mm. Some nematodes have sedentary females whose bodies swell to become fusiform, irregularly saccate, or spherical. Important among these are: Meloidogyne spp. (wheat, barley, maize, rice), Heterodera spp. (wheat, maize, rice), Hoplolaimus spp. (maize, rice), Ditylenchus spp. (oat, rye, rice), Anguina tritici (wheat), Pratylenchus spp. (oat, wheat, barley, rye, maize), Rotylenchulus spp. (maize), Tylenchorhynchus spp. (wheat, oat), Aphelenchoides spp. (rice), and Hirschmanniella spp. (rice). Most of the developing countries like India lie in tropical or subtropical regions where climate is suitable for activity and multiplication of nematodes 388almost throughout the year. Sandy and warm soils such as found in India other developing countries in the arid zone are very favorable for nematode infection, especially in irrigated areas, which are used for crop production continuously (Taylor, 1967).
