| Description | Technology advances in the smart grid can be considered as one of the main drivers and initial volume market for the Internet of Things (IoT)-a segment that we shall term the "Smart Grid Internet of Things" (SG-IoT). The key to SG-IoT is networking, preferably using IP-based communications. Utilities and electric grids operate over city, state, and national scales, and over different terrain (urban, suburban, rural) and deployment models, so both high-density and long-distance communications connectivity is required. Smart metering and advanced metering infrastructures (AMIs) have been the initial smart grid technologies to benefit from recent IoT technological advances in embedded intelligence and communications. With a strong focus on SG-IoT at the grid-edge and consumer interface, there is opportunity to leverage the data for applications related to the operation of the distribution grid.
