| Description | Introduction Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) rests on two primary theoretical foundations. The first and most important is Attachment eory, which forms the basis for understanding patients' relationship difficulties. The second, Interpersonal eory, describes the ways in which patients' maladaptive communication patterns lead to difficulty in their here-and-now interpersonal relationships. Communication is one manifestation of attachment behavior, but it is an extremely important particular in IPT, as it is the point of intervention for many IPT techniques. Social Theory is also a useful way to understand the impact of social support within an IPT framework, but is generally given a lesser theoretical role.a IPT is based on the premise that psychiatric and interpersonal difficulties result from a combination of interpersonal, social, and other factors, following the Biopsychosocial/ Cultural/Spiritual model of psychiatric illness and psychological distress. Upon this foundation rests the individual's temperament, personality traits, and early life experiences, which in turn are reflected in a particular attachment style. These factors, as well as cultural and spiritual factors, may be either predisposing or protective. The attachment style may be more or less adaptive, and has effects upon the person's current social support network and her ability to enlist the support of significant others. To put it succinctly, individuals with biological and psychological diatheses will be more likely to become distressed when experiencing interpersonal crises. Interpersonal functioning is determined by the severity of the current stressors in the context of social support. This is depicted in the Interpersonal Triad (Figure 2.1), which is the IPT model that explains why people become distressed. Book Name: Interpersonal Psychotherapy 2E A Clinician's Guide |
