| Description | Plant oil (vegetable) has been evaluated to substitute the mineral-based lubricants due to its natural and friendly characteristics for environment. Availability of vegetable oil made it a renewable source of bio- oils. Additionally, vegetable oil based lubricants has indicated a potentials for reducing hydrocarbon emission and carbon dioxide while utilizing in the IC engines and industrial operations. In this study, the sunflower oil was investigated to study its lubricant characteristics under different loads using the four-ball tribometer and tested the exhaust emissions using a four stroke single cylinder diesel engine. All experimental works were conforming to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM 4172-B). Under low load, the results exhibit that the sunflower oil shows adequate tribological characteristics (anti-friction and anti-wear) compared to petroleum oil samples. Results demonstrated also, the sunflower based lubricant was the more effective in reducing the emissions level of CO, $CO_{2}$ and hydrocarbon under different test conditions. Therefore, sunflower oil has the potential to be used as lubricant of mating components. |
