Description | Navigation technology allows surgeons to better understand the spatial relationship between their intra-operative tool placement and their preoperative plans, thereby synergistically augmenting the precision of robotic-assisted surgery. In the author's opinion, preoperative planning for a surgery with complex anatomy is critical. This CT scan was entered into the robotic preoperative planning software to allow for detailed three-dimensional anatomic planning to achieve optimal implant location, density, and fixation. Careful preoperative planning is essential and in this case, was performed many days prior to the actual surgery. Implant location and size are known well before the surgery which improves intra-operative efficiency and can decrease cost by avoiding opening unnecessary instruments and implants for the surgery. The patient was prepared for surgery and draped in sterile manner along with the robotic apparatus. The reference frames on the robot and surgical instruments were then confirmed to have adequate lines of sight with the navigation camera. Book Name: Advanced Robotic Spine Surgery |
