| Description | When undertaking educational research, there is the natural tendency to lead with an idea for a new thing to teach or a new way to teach something, then set about trying to prove that new idea or new method 'worked'. However, the outcomes studied in such research often default to such soft outcomes as: learners' 'comfort' with the material, their 'intention' to practice in a certain way, etc. This is a particular problem in primary care educational research, as the frequency of presentation of certain diseases, not to mention their outcomes, is diluted by the broad population of our panels, making it more difficult to achieve the rate of outcomes needed to show a difference. Fortunately, there is a wealth of potentially researchable questions in curriculum development and delivery that are important to study. The key to accessing these questions is planning the educational design and delivery carefully, so that researchable questions are evident at each step in the process. Instructional design is an educational discipline focussed on the systematic design and development of education and training to effectively change behaviour and achieve results. This chapter reviews some of the tools of instructional design – the use of a generic curriculum development model, the role of instructional objectives and two popular educational evaluation models – to exemplify the conduct a curriculum development project that lends itself more readily to educational research.
