| Description | The Italian territory is mostly constituted by outcropping soils that are defined in geotechnical terms as “complex structure soils”. The territory is overall characterized by new formations, related to the young geological age of the Alpine chain and the Apennine ridge, and by many landslides and instability phenomena (which cover 6.6% of the whole national territory). The need to realize the infrastructural network, in such a complex geological and geotechnical background, has led all the Italian production chain to develop a deep know-how in the whole construction process. According to the new Italian Building Code and considering the strong impact of the infrastructures on a geologically complex territory, ANAS started a new geological and geotechnical monitoring service investing 25 million euro in the period 2018–2020. This paper aims to highlight the evolution of geotechnical monitoring and the new strategies prepared by ANAS.
