| Description | Insitu stress measurement using hydraulic fracturing method is new in Indonesia. This method was applied to determine 3 dimensional insitu stresses at the Pongkor underground gold mine, West Java. Three bore holes of different directions were drilled for this particular measurement. The tests were carried out at Tramming South Ciurug Level 500 with depth of 290m from surface. The rock mass around the test locations were of tuff breccias and tuff andesite. This paper describes and discusses the result of the hydraulic fracturing test conducted at the Pongkor underground gold mine.This chapter describes and discusses the result of the hydraulic fracturing test conducted at the Pongkor underground gold mine. As soon as an opening exists the insitu stresses change accordingly in an attempt to reach a balanced distribution. Considering the cost of the insitu stress measurements, it is apparently uncommon, particularly in Indonesia, to carry out stability analysis of an underground opening be predominantly based upon laboratory test, analytical calculation and numerical modeling. Having considered the foregoing matters, a comprehensive effort has been in place at the Geo-mechanics Laboratory of the Department of Mining Engineering ITB since year 2000 to develop the equipment and procedure of insitu stress measurement by means of hydraulic fracturing method. The basic fundamental of this technique to determine the in situ stress is by sealing off a section of rock mass within a borehole by packer and injecting high pressure fluid until the rock mass section gets fractured.
