| Description | Figure 1 shows an example of the input and output histories (concentration versus volume) of an ion-exchange column in a chromatographic process in which two ionic species, $K^{+}$ and $Na^{+}$, are separated from one another, using acid $(H^{+}$ ion) as eluant. The conditions for this separation, which will serve as our reference case, are summarized in Table 1. This example refers to a “conventional” or “cocurrent” scheme, in which feed and eluant are introduced at one end of the bed and products are collected at the other end. In this chapter we examine some operating schemes in which the flow pattern is more complex and involves recycling and flow reversals, and it will be shown that such operating schemes, if properly designed, are more efficient than the one-way scheme.
