| Description | This chapter covers the primary cleanup methods of contaminated groundwater, both ex situ and in situ. Ex situ technologies first involve pumping groundwater to the ground surface (Section 6.2) and then treating the water aboveground using one or more of a variety of treatment systems (Section 6.3) before discharging the treated water. In situ systems include air sparging and bioremediation (Section 6.4); these technologies involve injecting substances into the contaminated groundwater without having to remove it. Finally, monitored natural attenuation (MNA, Section 6.5), a passive but monitoring-intensive remediation approach, is covered for contamination cases for which it is suited.
