| Description | Usability evaluation can mean rather different things to different people. Evaluations of the usability of information systems and interactive technology can focus on narrow or broad issues. They may assess conformance with guidelines, reflect expert opinion, or - the concern of this chapter - assess performance in the hands of users. Their scope may range from study of individual interaction with detailed aspects of a user interface, to evaluating the use of a system to support work in an organizational setting. The style, timing, scale and design of any study should be shaped by its objectives, as should the choice of people involved. In practice, it seems that the nature of an evaluation may in some cases be dictated by the immediately available resources, the preferences of staff who are familiar with particular ways of doing such things, or lack of awareness from management of how best to meet their objectives.
