| Description | There is a growing concern among the population about the effects of environmental exposure (due to “uncontrolled” exposure of non-ionizing radiation) on public health. As discussed in previous chapters, the adverse effects of non-ionizing radiations on biological systems (ranging from cells to organisms) are causing immense concern. There are conflicting reports about the mechanism and the nature of the effects, indicating the possible relationship to human diseases (Frey 1967, 1974). It appears that a thorough application of standardized protocols is the key to reliable data acquisition and subsequent interpretation that could create a clearer picture for scientists and general public at large. Specific tuning of radiofrequency (RF) radiation in a clinical environment may lead to beneficial health effects. However, there is a need to know the level of microwave exposure at various times in different local environment. This necessitates the need to define the limits of electromagnetic fields EMF safe exposure for humans over a wide frequency band. The exposure due to ionizing radiation and the subsequent dosimetry is vastly different than due to non-ionizing radiations. Ionizing radiation can cause stochastic and deterministic effects, while most effects due to exposure from non-ionizing radiation appear to be only deterministic. Stochastic effects have been demonstrated due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This bridges the continuity between ionizing and non-ionizing parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. For ionizing radiation, there is a greater emphasis on optimization of protection even at low levels of exposure, whereas correspondingly for non-ionizing radiation there is a greater emphasis on keeping exposures below thresholds. Controlling adverse effects through the marking of safe level is still full of uncertainties. Book Name: Radio Frequency and Microwave Effects on Biological Tissues |
