| Description | This chapter analyses the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) interventions in post-Soviet ethnic and regional conflicts reveal important insights into the impact of the international dimension on post-Soviet transition. The OSCE has intervened to prevent, manage and settle regional conflicts featuring these elements, such as in Crimea, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh. This is followed by an assessment of the OSCEs efforts at preventing, managing and resolving the regional conflicts in Crimea, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The OSCE had a profound influence on the development of regionalism and ethnic politics in the post-Soviet area by delineating the limits of their valid expression. The OSCE actively discourages manifestations of regionalism that threaten state security, and by implication European security. The case of Nagorno-Karabakh demonstrates the inherent contradiction of the OSCEs two key operational principles: respect for state sovereignty and respect for the self-determination of minorities.
