| Description | This chapter aims to identify the presence of physical and/or psychological violence in the couple relationships through a series of questions in cases in which violence is not specifically identified by the clients as the problem, or to assess the severity of violence if violence is identified by the clients as a clinical concern. Conservative estimates for the rates of intimate partner violence consistently indicate that physical violence will occur in 20–25% of all intimate partnerships. In clinical settings, the number of couples affected by violence is considerably higher. However, very few couples identify violence as a presenting problem when entering therapy. Asking questions about violence in the presence of both partners before obtaining a clear picture of the nature of the power differential and conflict in the relationship could place one or both partners at risk for serious harm.
