| Description | This chapter encourages a critical look at the obsession with counting in audiovisual media industries. Rather than neutrally inquisitive, this impulse aims to translate the world into a language that is palatable to the external glance, to foreign investment, to bank investment, to corporatization, and to be understandable by global actors. This chapter analyzes this impulse in the work of critical media industries researchers and industry investment alike, assessing the ways in which qualitative researchers are compelled by readers and editors to include quantitative measures of their topics as a means to justify their industry as worthy of analysis. While particularly important for studies of informal audiovisual media industries, this analysis is relevant for even the most formal media industries, as no media industry is fully transparent and formal. Rather than relying upon official figures, this chapter suggests alternative ways of understanding media industries based in intensive case studies and market studies, areas in which critical qualitative researchers are particularly well-poised to contribute.
