| Description | What is global climate justice? And how can we operationalise abstract philosophical concepts to study EU climate policy and the international climate regime? In this chapter, we discuss the existing literature, link it to our thematic chapters, and develop our conceptual framework of global climate justice centring on the concepts of 'non-domination', 'impartiality', and 'mutual recognition'. Existing debates on climate justice have mainly focussed on substantive notions of justice and on abstract ideal-typical principles. We argue that while this constitutes an important starting point, such a focus does not suffice to make sense of international negotiations and changes in the climate regime. In particular, the literature has not sufficiently considered the power imbalances, political constraints, and cultural differences that play a central role in climate politics. In this chapter, we show how our tripartite approach to global justice, which emphasises procedural and non-ideal aspects, can help to address these issues. We also outline how we operationalised the three justice dimensions for empirical analysis and discuss the dual function of the three conceptions of justice as analytical tool and normative yardstick.
