| Description | Though only a subdivision of Niger-Congo, the Bantu languages in themselves constitute one of the major families of the world. They are spoken south of what is sometimes called the “Bantu line,” extending from Cameroon on the west to Kenya on the east. The most important Bantu language by far is Swahili, the most widely spoken African language of East Africa. Other major languages are Luba, Kongo, and Lingala, of Congo-Kinshasa; Kikuyu, of Kenya; Ruanda, of Rwanda; Rundi, of Burundi; Ganda, of Uganda; Nyanja, of Malawi and Zambia; Bemba, of Zambia; Shona, of Zimbabwe; Tswana, of Botswana and South Africa; Sotho, of Lesotho and South Africa; and Zulu and Xhosa, of South Africa. There are more than 300 Bantu languages in all, with as many as 200 million speakers. Book Name: The Languages of the World |
