| Description | A considerable quantity of Roman cut stone was reused in both the Anglo-Saxon abbey and its Romanesque successor. Most of this as far as can be ascertained consisted of undecorated blocks though there was evidence for cramp-holes. Amongst the fragments preserved in the cathedral, however, is a fragment from a major inscription probably with a consular date of the mid-2nd century AD, as well as part of what appears to be a section of the shaft of a monumental pilaster embellished with vegetal ornament and a very important figural relief which forms the major subject of this contribution.
