| Description | One of the contexts of the 'as if use of imagination in development is make-believe or fantasy play in which a child transforms objects to mean something other than their literal meaning, and/or pretends to be someone other than he is. Oral story-making also emerges in early childhood, and is characterised by parallel developments in distancing and in complexity of structure. Applebee re-examined the stories in terms of structural organisation, and found six basic structures. The least structured organisation characterises what are hardly stories at all, but rather a string of events, a kind of free association showing few links from one sentence to the next. The Crediton Project was a study carried out by Wilkinson, Barnsley, Hanna and Swan into the development of children's writing. In sum, these accounts of studies of children's oral story-making, their responses to stories and their writing all show developmental trends which reflect characteristics of cognitive development in general.
