| Description | This chapter examines the link of memory and populism by using an urban and material lens, reflecting on how urban space in the former Yugoslavia has become an arena of display for populist politics. It focuses on two cities, Belgrade and Sarajevo, which experienced different forms of warfare in the 1990s, with different impacts on the cities – a scarred cityscape in Sarajevo after the 1992–1995 war and destroyed key sites in Belgrade after the 1999 NATO bombing. The chapter analyses how the reconfiguration of urban space in Belgrade and Sarajevo after the destruction provided a platform for populist politics. First, it examines the debates regarding the ruins of the Generalstab in Belgrade in relation to the Belgrade Waterfront project, analyzing how victimhood, but also obfuscation of memory, are joined by a developmentalist approach to urban space utilized by populist politics. Second, it showcases how at the end of the siege of Sarajevo, reconstruction took place in both the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (the main city of Sarajevo) and the new city of Eastern Sarajevo, in Republika Srpska, and how this was mobilized as a nation-building project, mirroring and sustaining the divided memory politics in the country.
