| Description | This paper aims to question and interrogate the dominant use of the notion of representation in the context of rock art research. It will be argued that this notion needs to be fundamentally revised and related to the ontology of images and as entangled in the wider understanding of the creation of meaning and significance through human practices, perception, and interpretation. As such, images are always 'in the making' in the same way that human beings are always in the making. In such a relational understanding, the ontology of images depends on the ontology of the image's maker and perceiver and vice versa. These considerations will be discussed and illustrated with reference to insights that have been gained into the ontological scheme connected to the WanjinaWunggurr art tradition in the Kimberley, Northwest Australia, over the last few decades. It needs to be recognised, however, that research itself is relationally constituted and entangled in social and political power relationships. A concern with the ontologies of rock art, images, and Indigenous knowledge must necessarily encompass a critical engagement with the ontologies of academic practice itself and its deep world-building and world-destroying capacities.
