| Description | The science-and-religion debate has been shaped by particular historical agendas, which have led to the promotion of a 'conflict thesis' concerning science and religion. Understanding the history of the debate helps us not only to appreciate why people have cared about the relationship of science and religion in the past, but also to understand why the contours of the present-day science-and-religion debate take the form they do, not least in the ongoing presumption of conflict. However, the nature of the debate is changing to reflect changing understandings of both science and religion. This means that there are additional reasons for engaging with that debate in the present day, in terms of broadening and deepening our understanding of what science and religion actually are. This leads us further to the realisation that the science-and-religion debate is not just about abstract ideas. Both science and religion aim to promote human flourishing, and their productive engagement over practical issues in fields such as (for example) ecology and bioethics may already be seen. Anyone who is interested in how our modern understandings of science and religion have been formed, and in the potential to be gained from their interaction, has grounds for caring about the science-and-religion debate.
