| Description | This chapter argues that rather than assuming a general 'Christian' or 'minority' perspective on and practice of citizenship, we have to delve deeper into the varied types of communal identification in order to understand how different Christian groups have made different choices in their relationship to governments and the state, and thus in the practice of citizenship. In addition to religious difference as mostly legalized into a communitarian system, differences in language practice, regional dynamics and social class resulted in a wide variety of ways to participate in the Arab states, varying from political identifications with the 'Arab' majority to sustained forms of minoritization. During the twentieth century these positions changed and developed, whereas the recent wars and upheavals tended to increase “sectarianization” and “securitization”, stimulating Christians to increasingly rely on the institutions and relative safety of their religious communities, with few incentives to cross boundaries and participate in non-sectarian civil activities. At the same time, however, new ways of collective and individual participation are being developed, thereby re-inventing forms of active inclusive citizenship.
