| Description | This chapter focuses on some of the common difficulties, which are inter-related—falls, urinary incontinence (UI), pain, reduced mobility, and physical activity and loneliness. It is commonly known that people aged 65 or more have the highest risk of falling. About 30% of this age group and living at home will experience at least one fall a year. Although UI is not life threatening, its impact on individuals living with this difficulty and on the health service cannot be underestimated. Sadly, many people with bladder and bowel incontinence experience this problem in silence, and are too embarrassed to seek help. Experiencing pain in old age should not be seen as an aspect of normal ageing. Much can be done by nurses to promote activity and movement in older people whilst recognising their difficulty in mobility. Loneliness among older people is increasingly recognised as a public health problem. Book Name: Nursing Older People |
