| Description | This chapter looks at developments in Poland and Hungary since the collapse of communism as they affect writers. While the collapse was difficult enough, membership of the EU in 2004 presented incredible business and investment opportunities and financial support for infrastructure development, but it also contradicted sustaining traditions in literature, culture and political life, confronted these countries with attitudes that were secular and disconcertingly 'modern', demanded they move past the problems of 'justice' and blame, and proved to be a profound challenge to established national identities. The EU at first made these countries feel they were not European enough, then feel that Western Europe had lost its way and later that they (not the West) were in fact the 'true' Europeans. Since 2015 the centre-left in East-Central Europe has given way to right-wing, authoritarian, populist governments harking back to right-wing inter-war governments, keen to accept EU finance but determined to refuse refugee quotas, protect their ethno-national inheritance and resist all 'foreign interference'. Now writers – particularly gay, feminist and experimental writers – often find themselves side-lined by the growth of the authoritarian right, out of step with the 'national mode', and forced to reconsider their role as writers, their identity as Poles and their relationship to the idea of 'Europe'.
