| Description | The cinema sent a message of liberation, modernism, justice and radical change, and assisted in the creation of a new national, socialist identity in Russia by creating and projecting new ideas and aesthetics that fed the popular imagination. Filmmaking and film viewing in Occupied Palestine in this period were all but non-existent, with most of the cinemas closed down or destroyed by Islamic militants. In Israel – an affluent, Westernised society with ample public support for cultural production – funding for projects which could not possibly have taken place before was now available from a range of organisations, including the large Israel Cinema Fund and the Rabinowitz Film Fund. Palestinian cinema is impressively lively for such a small, divided nation with such a large diaspora. Indeed, the vivacity and complexity of Palestinian cinema is the envy of many larger and richer nations and now has a global reach. Book Name: Contemporary Radical Film Culture |
