| Description | In the transnational society today, the teaching and learning of English is caught in a tension between normative ideologies and postmodern realities. Critical explorations of inequality, marginalization, and oppression in teaching and learning English have led scholars to draw on postmodernist and poststructuralist frameworks to unpack discourses and ideologies, shedding light on linguistic, pedagogical, and human diversity, fluidity, and hybridity. More recently, an additional conceptual lens has been proposed to pay attention to materiality embedded in the reproduction of social and linguistic inequalities. While these two foci—discourse/ideology and political economy or “a bivalent approach to inequality” (Block, 2018)—would help us understand and critique normative thinking and practices in English language teaching, adding another lens of praxis would facilitate the transformation of normative beliefs and practices observed in our field. Focusing on teaching English as a foreign language (EFL), specifically in the context of Japan, this chapter presents five personal episodes that I encountered related to common beliefs about English, English users, culture, and English language education policies. By using a bivalent critique of language ideologies and political economy, I examine the ideological and socioeconomic facets underlying the problems in these episodes. Furthermore, a perspective of praxis that combines critical reflection and action will encourage us to enact criticality for actual transformation.
