| Description | This lecture explores what neoliberalism is; why it is seen as socially detrimental, especially for deepening inequality; how it damages theatre and performance; and how plays, performances, and theatre workers have countered some of its worst effects. The lecture argues that theatre and performance are important sites for both highlighting neoliberalism's problems and challenging them, especially through modelling alternative practices of social engagement that draw less on competition and more on collaboration and solidarity. Texts, theatre, and their contexts examined include Caryl Churchill's Serious Money (1987), Lucy Prebble's Enron (2009), immersive theatre, and effects of gentrification on venues such as San Francisco's Lorraine Hansberry Theatre.
