| Description | Introduction Empowerment of the disadvantaged has been the focal point of both academia and practitioners in fields of rehabilitation, psychology and social work. The notion of empowerment is commonly associated with a process of change and the power and ability to make choices (Kabeer, 1999). Wallerstein (1992), for example, defined empowerment as “a multilevel construct that involves people assuming control and mastery over their lives in the context of their social and political environment” (Purdue & Howe, 2012). Peterson (2014) emphasized the dynamic nature of the notion as “an active, participatory process through which individuals and groups gain greater control over their lives, acquire rights and reduce marginalization”.
