| Description | Postcolonial studies tend to reduce 'mobility' to a synonym for global migratory movements or a metaphor for the 'migrant condition'. In order to promote a wider understanding of postcolonial mobilities, this chapter adopts a Mobility Studies perspective for analysing representations of Middle Passage journeys and contemporary Afroeuropean clandestine migrant mobilities through the zombie figure. The zombie is a pertinent metaphor for analysing the travelling conditions of the victims of slave trade, and topical in the context of the 'migrant crisis' where clandestine travellers engage in life-threatening mobile pursuits to reach Europe and are represented as threatening hordes ready to 'devour' the continent. The text corpus includes Fabienne Kanor's Humus (2009); Kangni Alem's Esclaves (2009); Wilfried N'Sondé's Un océan, deux mers, trois continents (2018); Abasse Ndione's Mbëkë Mi: À l'assaut des vagues de l'Atlantique (2008); Fabienne Kanor's Faire l'aventure (2014); and Mohamed Mbougar Sarr's Silence du chœur (2017). My reading focuses on the tropes of abjection, darkness, death, and non-arrival, which constitute the poetics of zombified mobilities. By establishing parallels between historical and contemporary coerced maritime journeys through the zombie metaphor, this chapter addresses the human and cultural dimensions of Afro-Caribbean mobilities and elucidates their links with today's Europe.
