| Description | Max Weber provides foundations for any discussion of power, legitimacy, and authority. These foundations have been a contested source of translation at the core of which is the meaning of the German term Herrschaft. Hence, the chapter begins by discussing Weber and Parsons' translation of this term as authority rather than domination. What differentiates the latter two terms is the precise calibration of legitimacy. Parsons' work on power and legitimacy is brought into focus, before discussion of further elaborations of the conceptualization of legitimacy by Suchman. Suchman's concepts of legitimacy relate to contemporary debates about power, centered on the work of Lukes. Lukes' contributions highlight a persistent theme in the chapter concerning the grounds of consent to power relations as the central element determining the legitimacy of these as either domination or authority.
