Promoting sustainability through corporate social responsibility

Description	This chapter focuses on opportunities and potential of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in promoting sustainable development and climate change adaptation in India through two different studies. The first study discusses the impacts of different CSR activities implemented by Lupin Human Welfare Research Foundation (LHWRF) towards improving the socio-economic conditions of the rural poor in the Vidisha and Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh, India. The second study compared the sustainability reports of five leading Indian public and private companies based on Global Reporting Initiative guidelines towards their reporting on sustainability. The overall analysis of sustainability reports in this study showed that reporting on social and environmental indicators was less comprehensive as compared to their reporting on economic dimension. The findings of the study revealed that CSR/Sustainability programmes impacted significantly to beneficiaries in improving their socio-economic condition and should synergize with other ongoing related government programmes for enhancing the effectiveness of implementation.
