| Description | This chapter presents the history of the book and of publishing in Argentina from the colonial era through the 1950s. It asks to what extent was the history of publishing in Argentina unique – in regard to the stories it tells, and to the role of the book in national culture, as compared to the rest of Ibero-America. Answering these questions requires delving into the most prominent characteristics of the history of Argentine publishing: (1) the importance of foreigners and transnational spaces in the arrival and adoption of the arts of printing, editing, and the commercialization of books; (2) the central role of a series of projects that, from the beginning of the 20th century, sought to produce collections of “affordable books” that helped affirm the existence of a significant mass of readers; and (3) the actions of key Argentines who participated decisively in generating an interdependent network of connections among the different Ibero-American markets. As this also serves as an introductory chapter, it takes into account the state of international scholarly work on the book and publishing and also contemplates Argentine historiography.
