| Description | This chapter provides an overview of risk assessment methodologies, and examines the importance of risk assessment in the hazardous waste site remediation process—from the identification of which sites require cleanup through the selection of a final remedy. It focuses on an actual Resource Conservation and Recovery Act -site cleanup is presented to illustrate the application of risk assessment to the remedy selection process. The chapter assesses the risk posed to the off-site community in the event of a hypothetical, worst-case instantaneous release of contaminants from drums in a landfill. In general, risks associated with chronic exposures to carcinogens, chronic exposures to noncarcinogens, and acute exposures are evaluated separately to reflect the different conditions of exposure and the different mechanisms of toxicity. The use of decision trees and a full consideration of potential risks aid in the evaluation of remedial alternatives and the selection of a cost-effective remedy that is fully protective of human health and the environment.
