| Description | Latin American cinema has a long and complex history of cinematic coproduction. Generally, critical assessments of coproduction in the region have tended to assume that these arrangements mirror colonial hegemony, thereby replicating relations of power where Latin America is influenced and creatively controlled by Europe. Yet, my research shows that in the era of neoliberal globalization coproductions are more financial than content-based. This chapter offers data and statistics on coproductions across a range of Latin American nations and shows that many of the assumptions that had grounded previous critiques of coproduction—namely that with financial investment comes ideological pressure—no longer hold true.
