| Description | Social policy as an academic discipline has developed considerably over time, from its origins in 'social administration', frequently linked with a Fabian social democratic viewpoint, to a more comprehensive perspective, which is concerned with the actions of governments and other actors with a broad focus on the welfare and well-being of individuals and societies. The Major governments were also notable for the 'back to basics' campaign on social problems from 1993, which, at least as interpreted by much of the media, contrasted sharply with the failure of a number of minsters to provide moral leadership, as illustrated in a series of high-profile scandals. In addition, from the 1970s there has been much greater awareness within UK social policy of the relevance of comparisons and international insights and influences on the study and understanding of the subject. Notwithstanding the discussion, the nature of the academic subject of social policy has changed considerably over time. Book Name: The Routledge Handbook of British Politics and Society |
