| Description | Prudent and practical data security controls are enabling assurance in electronic transactions over insecure networks. The Internet and electronic commerce have raised the awareness level of security, but good data security controls concepts are not new. This chapter explains effective security controls as they apply to electronic commerce technologies. In order to establish proper security controls, an organization must develop an overall security architecture that provides clear guidelines but incorporates enough flexibility to deal with the reality of changing business and technology environments. The architecture must start with an understanding of the business to ensure that the security controls are properly focused. Security controls at the database and application level will enforce the levels of access. Prudent and practical data security controls are enabling assurance in electronic transactions over insecure networks.
