| Description | In common with other peoples of Africa, the Somalis have a rich cultural heritage of their own, which in their case culminates in its verbal expression. As far back as the memory of their oral tradition can reach they have had an extensive and lively oral literature which not only preserves old poems and prose narratives but provides a running commentary on current events, which it has often influenced. Somali oral literature has attracted both Somali and foreign scholars, and anyone who wishes to acquaint himself with the relevant publications will find bibliographical guidance in Johnson 1969, 1973 and 1974 and in Andrzejewski 1975. Apart from a few linguistic minorities of insignificant numbers, Somali is spoken over the whole territory of Somalia and even extends far beyond its boundaries. It seems that Somalia is moving towards the use of the national language as the medium of education at all levels, except in fields of science and technology at university standard.
