| Description | This chapter is about children's literature in the early years of children's development. It touches on many issues relating to children's literature and literacy development within a socio-cultural framework. The value of sharing literature with children is explored through a range of texts, and a number of strategies for using children's literature in the literacy program are described. The chapter provides a summary of a few effective ideas to use literature to help children learn to read and write. When used sensitively by early childhood professionals it entertains and helps children develop self-awareness and understanding. Further, some of its meaning is derived as it is shared in the context of critical literacy activities. Through reading a range of stories to children from birth every day and sharing ideas about books, adults help to develop the kind of rich literacy environment that provides an excellent basis for learning literacy.
