| Description | This chapter is about the way space is construed in academic writing. “Languages have rich resources for construing human experience of location in, and movement through, space” (Matthiessen and Kashyap, 2014, p. 1), among which are prepositional phrases (PPs). These resources “are differentially deployed in texts operating in different contexts” (Matthiessen and Kashyap, 2014, p. 1). Contexts in Systemic Functional Linguistics are configurations of field, tenor and mode representing the register of the text, which corresponds, in academic writing, to disciplines (Gardner, 2012). Two disciplines are compared in this study: the medical and the social sciences. Contexts can also be defined according to the culture around the production of a text, or its genre. From the field of academia, research articles (RAs) are studied in this chapter, with a focus on their sections: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. A corpus of RAs from both disciplines is collected, and computational tools are used to extract the PPs (AntConc) and annotate the studied sample (CorpusTool). The results have revealed that while certain global frequencies reveal similar choices of space expressions in both registers, such as the use of certain textual references to highlight the contribution(s) in the RA, others are local, that is, differentiating between the contexts. For instance, concrete space is associated with the medical sciences, and abstract space is rather linked to the social sciences. In these cases, the same linguistic resources are used to convey different meanings in their respective contexts. Book Name: Perspectives from Systemic Functional Linguistics |
