| Description | Any changes in policy by the IOC have often unintended consequences in the organisation and structure of the IPC because one organisation has lots of money and influence and the other is dependent on its more influential partner. This chapter reviews this relationship and the challenges that are tied with it. The structure of this chapter is broadly divided along two distinct time periods. First, the chapter starts by exploring the early interactions between the IPC predecessors and the IOC in the period 1948–1999. Following this important historical section that documents celebration as well as tension between the IOC and the IPC, the chapter turns to the 'marriage' between the two organisations that occurred at the dawn of the new millennium. That section is followed by a discussion and a brief conclusion. Book Name: Routledge Handbook of the Olympic and Paralympic Games |
