| Description | Energy management systems (EMS) are computer-based systems used today to operate the complex electric power systems around the world.* These systems assure that the power system or “grid” operates properly and that consumers enjoy reliable electricity supply at the lowest possible cost. These systems operate by balancing the demand for electricity with generation resources (see sidebar). However, the rapid growth of renewable power generation, the increased use of electric vehicles, and increased need to integrate customers with the power system are rendering the current generation of EMS systems obsolete. This paper examines the evolution of today's grid operating system and outlines the development of a new grid operating system which will facilitate the transformation of the grid. Without the development of an advanced grid operating system, the full value of a lot of individual technologies like electric vehicles, electric energy storage, demand response, distributed resources, and large central station renewables such as wind and solar will not be fully realized.
