| Description | Fred Wilson's influential 1992 intervention at the Maryland Historical Society 'Mining the Museum' saw the artist redisplaying objects from the museum's collection, creating juxtapositions which brought to the fore narratives concerning challenging aspects of Maryland's history, above all slavery, racism and the illtreatment of Native Americans. The project provides one example of the role of the artist invited to intervene by museums and galleries keen to diversify their institutional narratives and tackle head-on challenging histories, and we find the aspirations around Wilson's three-fold meaning of the verb 'to mine' – to uncover, to challenge or attack and to appropriate – echoing through many such interventions.
