Description	The use of compact city policies to achieve sustainable patterns of development has grown in popularity and application. But sustainable development (SD) is a broad and multidimensional concept which puts emphasis on quality of life and equity issues, as much as it does on the need to reduce travel and energy use. The goal of SD is now widely accepted by governments throughout the world even though many have difficulty in putting the principles into practice. In the United Kingdom, the government has shown commitment to SD and has made it the touch-stone for all planning policy and practice. Mixed use development is an important element of a SD environment. The adaptability of older buildings facilitates mixed use which in turn enables people to live, work and socialise within the same area.
