| Description | The relationship between the Holy See and the Viennese court was relatively rippling in the seventeenth century. Papal diplomacy aimed to uphold the status quo in the Holy Roman Empire at the beginning. Based on political reasoning, the Holy See supported the emperors with varying sums during the Thirty Years' War. The Peace of Westphalia in 1648 eliminated Rome from the new power system of Europe.
